On desktop, open Gmail settings using the gear icon and stay on the “General” tab. Here, uncheck the option labeled “Smart features.” This is the first step, but not the last.

Next, click on Manage Workspace smart feature settings. A separate window will appear, allowing you to disable smart features across Google Workspace and other Google products. Turning this off limits features like “Ask Gemini,” automatic calendar event creation, and personalized suggestions across Maps, Wallet, and Google Assistant.

Mobile users can follow a similar process. Open Gmail, scroll to the bottom of the inbox menu, tap “Settings,” then go to “Data privacy.” From there, toggle off “Smart features” and again disable Workspace smart features in the secondary menu.

What You Lose by Opting Out

Disabling these settings comes with trade-offs. Features like Smart Compose, automatic inbox categorization, grammar and spell check, and predictive replies may stop working. Gmail becomes more manual, requiring users to organize emails and proofread messages themselves.
