WhatsApp Rolls Out Auto-Download Quality Feature for Beta Users on Android
WhatsApp is bringing a new feature to help users control the quality of photos and videos that get downloaded automatically. This feature, called Auto-download Quality, is now available for some Android users who are part of the WhatsApp beta program.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently rolling out to users running WhatsApp beta version 2.25.18.11 on Android. More beta users are expected to receive the feature in the coming weeks.
Once available, users can find this option in Settings > Storage and data, just below the “Media upload quality” setting. The new “Auto-download quality” option gives two choices:
- Standard quality: Downloads a compressed version of the media.
- HD quality: Downloads the full high-resolution version.
Even if you choose “Standard quality” for auto-downloads, you can still tap on the media inside the chat to view it in HD — as long as the HD version is still stored on WhatsApp’s servers.
In addition, WhatsApp has added a new dual-upload system when sending HD photos and videos. This means your phone will upload both standard and HD versions of the media.
Why is this needed? Because of WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, the app can’t compress media on its own servers. So both versions are uploaded directly from the sender’s phone. If the recipient has selected standard quality for auto-download, only the compressed version will be downloaded and decrypted.
This new feature gives users more control over their data usage and media quality — a helpful addition for those on limited data plans or with storage concerns.
