Apple unveils the A16 Bionic, its most powerful mobile chip.

Yesterday, Apple unveiled the A16 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The A16 Bionic is the replacement for the A15 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. It has 16 billion transistors, created using a 4 nm process, and is equipped with parts that have been specifically engineered to speed up AI and other operations in iOS and mobile apps.

According to Apple, the A16 Bionic contains a 16-core neural engine, a 16-core GPU, and a multicore processor with two high-performance cores and four efficiency cores.

This processor is capable of processing up to 17 trillion operations per second. The company also asserts that the efficiency cores consume a third of the power of undisclosed rival chips, while the high-performance cores consume 20% less power than the A15 Bionic’s performance cores.

Apple claims that the A16 Bionic is up to 40% faster than competing chipsets overall and that the GPU has up to 50% more memory capacity.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s camera system is powered by a unique image signal processor. A new display engine, meanwhile, offers 1 Hz refresh rates, high peak brightness, always-on displays, and antialiasing to soften the display image’s jagged edges.
