DotOS 5.1 was released with a new wallpaper-based theming system and QS UI inspired by Android 12.

The DotOS project is now attempting to replicate this feature by developing their own version of the wallpaper-based theming system inspired by Android 12. If you’re unfamiliar with DotOS, it stands for “DroidOnTime” and is a custom ROM created by XDA Recognized Contributor mohancm.

He built the ROM on top of the AOSP basis, adding various features that make it more enjoyable to use than AOSP alone. One of the innovations that will be included in the future DotOS 5.1 version is a new theme engine.

DotOS 5.1 Released with new Wallpaper Based Theme System

The theming system in DotOS 5.1, dubbed “MonetWannabe,” allows users to choose the type of palette they want to be generated from the wallpaper and manage the colour production process’ accuracy.

Iacob Ionut, AKA XDA Senior Member IacobIonut-DW, the DotOS ROM’s key UI/UX developer, has rewritten the entire framework from the ground up after meticulously reversing Google’s implementation.

The theming engine is designed to be modular. It’s also possible to change the colour of the Quick Settings media controls when they’re enabled. Turning off the framework and sticking to manual accent colouring is also an option.

Aside from the wallpaper-based theming system, the DotOS team has also redesigned the Quick Settings panel’s user interface. The UI revamp is based on the Android 12 early mockups, although there are a few more design aspects thrown in for good measure.

The corners of the notifications and the media player, for starters, are slightly softened. The Edit and Settings buttons have also been changed to make them more accessible and to match the rest of the panel’s features. The QS Customizer is the next to undergo a makeover, as it loses its previous backdrop and toolbar and gets a new look.
