Google Street View Gets New Camera and Additional Features
Street View by Google has been updated with new features and a new camera to record a 360-degree view of the world in honour of its 15th birthday. The ability of Street View to show historical photographs of various locations on Google Maps is the key attraction of this release. Here are the specifics:
Google Street View Brings Historical Images to Mobile Devices
In Google Maps for Android and iOS, you can now go back in time and explore historical photos of specific locations. This will serve as a time capsule of how certain locations were and have evolved. This feature was previously only available on Google Maps’ desktop version, which was added in 2014.
To access historical images of a location, simply touch the “See more dates” button located anywhere on the street view of that location, and you’ll be able to see images dating back to 2007, the year Street View was originally offered.
Another new announcement is a Google camera that will take Street View of various locations. Unlike the Street View car and trekker, this new camera is lightweight and modular. It’s “about the size of a house cat,” according to Google, and it can take high-resolution images with greater processing capabilities.
The camera, which has yet to be given a name, weighs roughly 15 pounds and can contain a variety of camera components such as Lidar sensors and other features to record additional information. It also appears to be cute! Another advantage is that it can be loaded into an automobile with a roof rack (before, a dedicated car and equipment were required!) for the extra simplicity of taking a 360-degree image of numerous locations. This, along with the Street View car and trekker, will be available next year.
Google also emphasises the utility of Street View. It can be used to give useful information to Google Maps, such as business details, power the Live View function, and provide users with immersive imageries of places all over the world.
