How To Download & Install Android 13 Beta 1 with Eligible devices

According to the plan, Google has officially published the first beta version of Android 13. The development of Android 13 has entered a new phase following the two Developer Previews, the first of which was released in February and the second of which was released in March. Unlike the Developer Preview, this Beta 1 is simple to install on Google Pixel smartphones that are supported.

Android 13 Beta 1 Installation Information

To begin the installation, go to the Android Beta Program page and scroll down to find your device (if it is suitable).

It will be possible to join the beta program and so obtain the OTA update for Android 13 Beta 1, as well as all subsequent releases, by following the suggested methods. Remember that until July, Google will release at least one beta version per month; after that, the stable version of the operating system will be released. New permissions relating to access to media files, improvements to APIs for audio routing, and much more were introduced with the initial beta.

In addition to all of the other advancements already presented with Developer Previews, the Android 13 beta 1 brings back an upgrade focused on privacy and security:

• Specific permissions for access to multimedia files
  • The system will no longer ask for access to all types of multimedia files: thanks to the new set of permissions, requests can be limited to a specific type of multimedia files, for example only audio files, as shown in the following image.

• Better error reporting in Keystore and KeyMint
  • For applications that generate (security) keys, Keystore and KeyMint provide more detailed and accurate error guidance.

• New APIs for audio routing
  To help media apps identify how audio will be routed, new routing APIs have been added to the AudioManager class.
  • Using the new getAudioDevicesForAttributes() API it will be possible to retrieve the list of devices on which audio can be played.
  • Through the getDirectProfilesForAttributes() API the system will understand if the audio stream can be played directly.

Android 13 will be officially released in Q3 2022, according to Google’s plan, following two Developer Previews (steps already completed) and four betas (with the first beta released now). Only with the third beta, scheduled for June 2022, is the next version of the operating system expected to reach maturity in terms of stability: once stability is achieved, APIs (level 33, since Android 12L has level 32 APIs) for SDK and NDK, as well as system behaviors related to apps, will be finalized.
