Samsung, one of the world’s largest cellular network infrastructure providers, has been named to the O-RAN open-source project’s TOC as an official member (Technical Oversight Committee). The office term for the South Korean corporation began this month and runs until the end of 2023.

The company has already contributed to the O-RAN Alliance, but becoming an official member allows it to make more crucial decisions about the ecosystem’s future development. Over the last two years, Samsung has been working on open-source code for the RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller). Samsung’s official delegate to the TOC is JinGuk Jeong, Vice President and Head of Advanced Solutions Team of Samsung Research’s Advanced Communications Research Center.

AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Orange, Nokia, NTT Docomo, Radisys, Samsung Electronics, TIM, Viavi, and Windriver are among the twelve formal members of the O-RAN SC TOC.

The telecommunications industry, as well as several other electronics companies, have been quite interested in O-RAN. It has the potential to become the next large RAN network for cellular networks that are better, faster, and more adaptable. Samsung has already begun supplying 5G vRAN solutions to network operators, but O-RAN will provide the technology additional flexibility.
