Starlink will soon Provide Improved In-Flight Wi-Fi Service

In-flight Wi-Fi has been a popular request from travellers who want to stay connected to the internet even when flying at high altitudes. While some airlines provide in-flight Wi-Fi for passengers for a fee, the internet speeds are nowhere like those of a competent home Wi-Fi network. And, thankfully, SpaceX’s Starlink seeks to change that in the not-too-distant future. The following are the specifics.

SpaceX’s Starlink Partners with Airlines to Provide Improved In-Flight Wi-Fi

According to The Verge, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has begun negotiating with airline companies to provide Starlink’s satellite-based internet service to passengers. Hawaiian Airlines and charter airline JSX have just signed agreements to add Starlink Wi-Fi to their flights. While the financial details of the agreements are being kept under wraps, both airlines have stated that they want to provide free in-flight Wi-Fi to passengers.

It’s worth noting that the concept of improving in-flight Wi-Fi has been on Starlink executives’ minds for quite some time. Jonathan Hofeller, SpaceX’s VP of Starlink, stated earlier this year that the business was working on an aviation product and was “in talks with several of the airlines.”

Hofeller claimed that once the negotiations are finalised and the Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi goes live on planes, there will be a huge improvement in in-flight Wi-Fi service. It’s worth noting, though, that Starlink still has a lot of work to do in the regulatory and product sectors.

As you may be aware, the business has been battling to develop its satellite-based internet service in nations such as India, where Reliance Jio is a big competitor. However, if the Elon Musk-backed startup can deliver in-flight Wi-Fi ahead of its competitors, it will have an edge over competitors and be able to cash in on a potentially billion-dollar industry.

In terms of Starlink’s in-flight Wi-Fi, JSX stated that the company has begun testing the service and plans to roll it out to its whole fleet later this year. On the other side, Hawaiian Airlines is still in the “early phases of deployment.” Despite this, it plans to install Starlink Wi-Fi on a few of its planes next year.
