Back in February, the first Android 11 Developer Preview was released with lots of features like double tapping on the back of your pixel device to activate google assistant, the google camera app, media controls, and many more. A tap brings iOS 14/Android 11’s Back Tap gesture to any Android device

With Android 11 Developer Preview 2, we got some more additional features like taking a screenshot and opening the recent apps overview. But with Android 11 Beta releases, all these features were removed entirely.

A recognised XDA Developer Kieron Quinn, also known as Quinny899 has managed to port all these features so that they will work on all Android devices.

Quinny899 has created an App called Tap which brings the double back tap gesture to any Android device running on Android 7 and above.

Through this app, Android users will get features like launching the camera app, recent apps, and simulating a home and back button press. Tap app uses the same machine learning models which are there on Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL.

For this app to work, no special hardware or software is required as all the app is doing is reading changes in the device’s accelerometer and gyroscope sensors.

How the Tap App works

Once the app is installed, you’ll have to enable the Accessibility Service in settings. You’ll have to choose a Device Model in Gesture settings. At present, there are 3 Device Models: Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL in the gesture settings. More devices will be added in the future.

Under “Actions”, you can choose what action you want to happen when you double tap the back of your device. You can have multiple Actions listed in the Tap.Tap will only prioritize running the topmost Action. If the chosen Action fails to run, the next Action in the list will run automatically.

Under the Gates section, you can choose what conditions will stop double tap gestures from executing an Action. The App won’t execute an Action when the screen is off if that condition is chosen. In Feedback settings, you can control whether or not your device vibrates and whether or not the device wakes up when an Action is executed.

Tap is an open-source app, and the first alpha release is available for download on the XDA forum thread linked below.
