YouTube brings back 1080p streaming option in India but only in Wifi.

In March, YouTube in India restricted video streaming quality on its mobile apps to 480p due to a sudden increase in Internet traffic. Since then, YouTube users in India had to bear the 480p streaming quality while the rest of the world could watch videos at higher resolutions.

Indian users were using unofficial apps like Newpipe to watch videos at higher resolutions. After three months since the restrictions, YouTube is finally re-enabling 1080p streaming in India.

Indian users can now watch videos at 1080p quality on their Android and iOS devices if they are connected to a WiFi network. The change seems to have been enabled via a server-side switch and doesn’t require updating the YouTube app.

The default streaming quality is still set at 480p and to watch videos in 1080p on mobile, we need to connect our device to a WiFi network. In order to do that just tap on the three-dot menu button in the top right corner of the video and then select 1080p from the quality settings.

In case you don’t have access to a stable WiFi connection, you’ll need to connect your device to a temporary WiFi connection and can download the stream at 1080p. Do note that 1080p streaming doesn’t seem to work with mobile hotspots.
