After nearly 5 years, Android 12.1 will deliver a new AOSP wallpaper.
The new code replaces Google’s default “pink sky” wallpaper, which was first introduced to the open source version of Android over 5 years ago. In its place comes a new wallpaper that will debut with the release of Android 12.1, the OS’s first point release in years, and which we at XDA have, of course, gotten ahead of time.
The “pink sky” wallpaper, which has been included in open source Android versions since Android 7.0 Nougat, is likely unknown to the vast majority of users. That’s because practically every Android smartphone runs a modified version of the OS.
You’ll most likely only see the wallpaper if you’re running a software build that modifies AOSP lightly, such as one of the AOSP-based custom ROMs available on the XDA Forums or a Generic System Image (GSI).
Android 12.1 is expected to come in the middle of the Android 12 and Android 13 releases. According to our sources, the stable edition of Android 12 will be released on October 4th, and Android 13 will be released somewhere in the fall of 2022. Meanwhile, the Android 12.1 point release will come with an API level increase, which is rare given that we haven’t had a platform-changing maintenance update since Android 8.1 Oreo in 2017.
