These days all smartphone companies come up with claims about long-lasting batteries with each of their new devices. Manufacturers stretch out battery life by killing apps in the background, which can break app functionality.

Urbandroid, the developers behind Sleep as Android is making a new benchmarking tool to measure the phone’s background app performance.

The app is named after Urbandroid’s earlier project and gives a more specific picture of how well a phone handles background apps. DontKillMyApp is available now in early access on the Play store.

To run the benchmark, the phone needs to be kept idle for some time and the app also lets you choose the duration of the test between one hour and 8 hours. The app also warns you against using the phone or charging it during the test period.

The app displays a persistent notification and if you need to use the phone, you can stop the benchmark. After installing the app, you get some details regarding your phone, some explanation about the app, and some troubleshooting solutions. At the bottom of the app, there is a “START BENCHMARK” button.

After tapping on it, you will get the option to choose the test duration. After choosing your test time, a warning will appear on the screen not to charge the phone or use it while the test runs. Tap on “OK” and the test begins.

The app runs a service in the foreground with the help of a persistent notification, adds a wake lock to it, and executes some repeating tasks on the main thread at intervals of 10 seconds. The app schedules and alarms every 8 minutes. It then measures how many of those expected executions have actually been performed.

The bottom of the app offers a visual in 5-minute intervals showing when parts of the test occurred so you can see when issues may have started.
