Snapchat Has Launched Small Drone called Pixy

Snap Inc. is not only the Snapchat development team, but it is also a stealth hardware manufacturer. Its Spectacles smart glasses were first unveiled in 2016 and have since gone through many revisions, including an AR-based pair that has yet to be released. The Pixy, an adorable yellow drone that’s essentially a flying camera, is the company’s newest hardware innovation.

The Pixy isn’t a large, obnoxious piece of plastic like some of the actual drones we’ve seen from companies like DJI. It’s a little, pocketable device with four tiny propellers instead. It’s about the size of your palm and weighs only 101 grams. There’s also no controller or SD slot – instead, there’s a camera wheel to regulate how the drone flies, and photographs and recordings are saved in your Snapchat Memories.

A regular floating mode, an option to orbit around you, and an option to follow you while you walk or run are among the pre-configured flying courses. Simply place your hand beneath the drone to stop it from recording, and it will land in your palm. When it comes to battery life, you can anticipate enjoying five to eight flights before it runs out.

This won’t replace a professional drone, but if all you want to do is post videos and photographs from unusual angles to your social media accounts — and you don’t care about prosumer models — it appears to be a very good option. It even has a carrying strap so you can take it with you wherever you go. The Pixy costs $230, and you can purchase a portable battery charger (which comes with two more batteries) for an additional $20, bringing the total to $250. It will be available for purchase in the United States and France, and you can sign up for updates on the Pixy website now.
