iOS 18 Marks the Most Significant Update in iPhone History

Today, Mark Gurman said in the subscriber-only QnA section of his Power On newsletter that iOS 18 will be the biggest update in Apple’s iPhone history. He writes, “I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history.”
Gurman confirmed that he will share particular iOS 18 features as well as changes in the future. But MacRumors, a big Apple news cover website, mentioned in the post that they already know two features that are expected to be coming with the iOS 18 update.
Expected Features of iOS 18
1. RCS Support: The first feature that is expected to come with the iOS 18 update is RCS support. Last year, in November, Apple announced that the iMessage app will support the cross-platform messaging standard RCS on the iPhone in 2024, which means you can use all the RCS between Android and iPhone.

As we know, if we message from iPhone to iPhone, then we see the blue bubble that was introduced by Apple in 2011. On the other hand, if an Android user messages an iPhone user then his message is shown in a green bubble. Also, Android users have limited features if we compare it with Apple’s iMessage. Nothing came forward with their Nothing Chats app but they failed to do that. They do this with Sunbird app developers. But later we came to know that the chats are not encrypted.
Now, let’s discuss how your messaging experience between Android and iPhone improves the experience.
- Audio messages: You can send voice messages from an Android phone to an iPhone.
- Typing indicators: As we know, when we send a message from iPhone to iPhone, then when any of the iPhone users type, we will see the typing indicator.
- Read Receipt: With this, you can know whether the receiver has read your message or not.
- Wi-Fi messaging between Android and iPhones: You can also message between both Android and iPhone devices with Wi-Fi as well.
- High-resolution photos and videos: As we know, till now we could not send high-resolution photos and videos between Android and iPhone, but from iOS 18, you can send high-quality resolution photos and videos from Android to iPhone.
- More Encrypted messages: You will get improved encryption of your messages if you compare it with SMS.
- Improved Group Chats: The group chats will also be improved.
- Leaving a conversation for Android Users: As we know, iPhone users can leave a conversation. So, Android users will also get the same functionality.
The above-listed features are already available when an iPhone user messages another iPhone user (blue bubble). But Apple will extend the RCS support for the green bubble i.e. Android in the Messages app. These features are already available in third-party messaging apps such as Telegram, and Whatsapp.
2. Smarter Siri: A report by Bloomberg suggested that in the upcoming iOS 18, we will see the generative AI technology. Both i.e. iPhone’s Messaging app and Siri use AI for your asked questions and to auto-complete your sentences as well. According to Gurman, Apple has also explored generative AI features for other apps over its platforms such as Apple Music, Keynote, Xcode, and Pages.

The information also reported that Apple is planning to include large language models into Siri. So, that users can automate their difficult tasks, it may be integrated into the Shortcuts app. As per a report, this feature is expected to come in the iOS 18 which is going to be launched this year.
As we know, the new version of iOS will be launched at WWDC every year in June. The stable release of iOS 18 will be in September, but the first beta is expected to be released in June as usual.

Google Maps Ask Maps Feature: 5 Powerful Gemini AI Upgrades That Transform Navigation

Google Maps Ask Maps Feature
Google Maps Ask Maps feature is a new AI-powered capability introduced by Google that allows users to ask conversational questions directly within the Maps app. Powered by Google’s Gemini AI, this feature transforms the navigation app into a smarter travel assistant capable of understanding complex queries and providing personalized recommendations.
Traditionally, Google Maps required users to search using simple keywords like “restaurants near me” or “gas station nearby.” With the Ask Maps feature, users can now ask detailed questions such as finding quiet cafés with charging points, planning a scenic road trip, or discovering less crowded places to visit. The system analyzes Maps data, including reviews, photos, and location insights, to deliver accurate and contextual results.

How Gemini AI Improves Google Maps
The integration of Gemini AI enables Google Maps to process natural language queries more effectively. Instead of multiple searches, users can ask complex questions in one go and receive detailed responses tailored to their needs. This conversational experience makes exploring new places easier and more intuitive.
For example, a traveler can ask Maps to suggest a route with scenic stops or find restaurants that match specific preferences. Gemini evaluates various factors such as location data, ratings, and user preferences to generate personalized suggestions. Over time, the system can adapt to user behavior and deliver more relevant recommendations.
Immersive Navigation Enhances the Driving Experience
Alongside Ask Maps, Google has also introduced Immersive Navigation, a visual upgrade designed to improve driving guidance. This feature provides detailed 3D visuals of roads, terrain, buildings, and landmarks, making it easier for drivers to understand complex intersections and route changes.

The navigation interface can highlight important elements like lanes, crosswalks, traffic signals, and nearby landmarks. These enhancements aim to provide better situational awareness and reduce confusion during navigation.
Availability and Future Expansion
Google has begun rolling out the Ask Maps feature on Android and iOS devices in the United States and India, with plans to expand to additional regions and desktop platforms in the future.
This update represents one of the most significant upgrades to Google Maps in years, positioning the platform as an intelligent travel companion rather than just a navigation tool. By combining AI-driven recommendations with immersive navigation, Google aims to simplify how people discover places, plan trips, and move around cities.

AltStore PAL Joins the Fediverse: A New Era for Decentralized App Discovery on iOS

AltStore PAL Fediverse integration signals a major shift in how apps are discovered and shared across decentralized social platforms. The alternative iOS app marketplace has officially joined the Fediverse, allowing developers to promote their apps and updates through decentralized social networks rather than relying solely on traditional app store discovery.
Developed by the team behind AltStore, AltStore PAL is an alternative marketplace that enables developers to distribute apps outside the ecosystem of Apple’s official App Store. With its latest move, the platform is embracing the decentralized web by launching its own server on the Mastodon network, which is part of the broader Fediverse.

What the Fediverse Integration Means
By joining the Fediverse, AltStore PAL introduces a new way for developers to communicate with users. App updates, announcements, and releases posted on AltStore PAL’s Mastodon server can automatically reach audiences across other federated platforms that support the ActivityPub protocol. This includes various decentralized social networks that connect within the Fediverse ecosystem.
The change allows developers to bypass traditional marketing channels and directly interact with communities that follow decentralized platforms. Users who follow the AltStore PAL account on Mastodon or compatible networks will receive updates whenever new apps or updates become available in the marketplace.

A Step Toward Decentralized App Discovery
This integration effectively turns AltStore PAL into what many consider the first federated app marketplace. Instead of relying entirely on algorithm-driven discovery systems used by centralized app stores, developers can share updates organically across connected social networks.
The approach also aligns with the growing movement toward open and decentralized internet platforms. By combining app distribution with federated social networks, AltStore PAL is experimenting with a new model where app discovery becomes community-driven rather than platform-controlled.
For developers and users interested in alternative app ecosystems, this move could reshape how independent apps gain visibility on iOS devices. As decentralized technologies continue to expand, integrations like this may become a key part of the future digital landscape.
